Holidaymakers have been warned they could face fines of up to £5,000 for trying to bring five specific items through customs - even if they bought them at duty-free.

Earlier this year, the government rolled out tough new rules in response to a severe disease outbreak across Europe.

Travellers returning from affected countries like Spain, France, Italy, and Greece must ensure their luggage is free of any prohibited items.

Currently, anyone found with banned items such as sandwiches, cheese, cured meats, raw meats, or milk will be stopped at the border, reports Bristol Live .

This ban holds true regardless of whether the goods are wrapped or packaged, or if they were bought in duty-free shops.
