The David Traylor Zoo welcomed five new feathered residents to the public last Friday - an emu herd.

The new emus came from an Olathe private owner, who reached out to the zoo looking to place the animals in a new home. The emu herd endured a two-month quarantine before entering a public viewing area, giving the zookeepers time to become familiar with the animals and establish a routine. The emus are also monitored for health concerns and to ensure they are healthy before contact with other animals.

Brenda Young, David Traylor Zoo Director, said that the animals have adjusted well to their new setting. The emus' names, Huginn, Hela, Sif, Muninn, and Freyja, were taken from mythological characters.
