Islanders moving into Guernsey States' housing will soon not have to provide their own carpets and other floor coverings.

Currently, similar to UK social housing, it is standard practice for flooring to be missing when a new tenant moves in - regardless of the condition or when it was last replaced.

This was justified due to concerns over potential damage, hygiene and the cost of maintaining existing carpets.

The States have now decided, however, that a "change is expected to be introduced early next year", covering anyone "moving into, or transferring within, States' housing".

Guernsey States continues: "Existing floor coverings that are in a suitable condition will be left in situ, after being professionally cleaned where necessary."
