Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley says he was “definitely a little shocked” to hear his name associated with former President Donald Trump ’s newly formed National Sports Council—especially since, according to him, he turned the opportunity down.

On Monday (Aug. 4), the Super Bowl champion spoke with reporters about being a member of the organization.

“A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council,” Barkley, 28, said after an Eagles training camp session. “So I’m not really too familiar with it.”

The National Sports Council, established by Trump as part of his campaign platform , aims to reinvigorate “traditional” values in sports.
