LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A group of ten prisoners on Arkansas's death row have filed a lawsuit claiming the new law allowing nitrogen gas for executions is unconstitutional.

Attorneys representing the prisoners filed the lawsuit in the Pulaski County Circuit Court against Act 302 on Tuesday. The law would allow the state to use nitrogen gas to execute a prisoner who is facing the death penalty.

Heather Fraley, who represents some of the prisoners, said the law gives "unprecedented and unchecked authority to unelected branch officials" at the Division of Correction.

“Arkansas juries explicitly sentenced our clients to execution by lethal injection – not gas – and the General Assembly cannot rewrite those verdicts to impose death by this very different and highly problematic method,” Fraley
