When Phoenix resident Bernice Passhel was born, people were watching Phantom of the Opera in the movies and singing “Yes Sir, That’s my Baby.”

They were also dancing the Charleston and eating the newly introduced Mr. Goodbar.

Much of that has been resigned to the history books, but Bernice is still kicking. In fact, she celebrated her 100th birthday August 4.

When asked if she would like 100 pieces of cake during her birthday party at the Desert Mission Adult Day Health Care she said, “Oh, I don’t think so!”

Though she can still blow out the candles on her cake.

She’s been at the center about nine years now. She’s best known by her colleagues for always asking “Is there any lipstick around?”and decrying, “I don’t want to sit next to a bunch of old men!”
