The run of mild summer weather in the Coachella Valley has come to an end.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for all valley cities and the San Gorgonio Pass starting Wednesday.
Temperatures could reach up to 118 degrees in one of the first extreme heat waves of the summer. The heat will likely be accompanied by haze from wildfire smoke drifting through Southern California from San Luis Obispo County.
The warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. Friday.
It is notable that the extreme heat is expected to come on the first day of school for the Palm Springs Unified School District, a time when children will potentially be walking outside for extended periods.
