OTTAWA - Canada's privacy commissioner has initiated an investigation into a cyberattack on WestJet. The airline reported that a "malicious actor" gained access to its systems, compromising some personal and travel-related data. This incident occurred in June and was described by WestJet as the work of a "sophisticated, criminal" third party.

WestJet has assured the public that the safety of its airline operations was never at risk. The office of Privacy Commissioner of Canada Philippe Dufresne stated that the investigation will assess the security measures WestJet had in place at the time of the breach. It will also evaluate how effectively the airline notified individuals whose data may have been affected.

The privacy commissioner's office is currently collaborating with WestJet to ensure the airline is taking the necessary steps to address the incident. The immediate goal is to confirm that WestJet is "effectively" managing the breach and safeguarding its customers' personal information.

This investigation highlights the growing concern over cybersecurity in the airline industry, as companies face increasing threats from cybercriminals. The outcome of the investigation may lead to recommendations for improved security practices within WestJet and potentially across the industry.
