AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott has taken legal action in the wake of House Democrats leaving Texas. He filed an emergency petition to remove state Rep. Gene Wu (D-Houston), who he calls the “ringleader of the derelict Democrats,” from office.
Abbott filed an emergency petition with the Republican-majority Texas Supreme Court, citing a Writ of Quo Warranto, which legally challenges a person’s right to hold public office.
More than 50 House Democrats remain out of Texas, blocking a vote on the GOP-backed redrawn congressional districts . On Sunday, they fled to Chicago, Boston, and Albany to break quorum.
