The U.S. government proposed a new federal rule on August 5, 2025, aimed at easing restrictions on drones traveling long distances out of their operators’ sight to promote wider commercial use.
The proposed regulation would streamline the approval process by establishing a clear path for drone operators to get authorization without the previously required cumbersome waiver process.
Driving the news: Since 2017, the FAA has approved 657 waivers allowing companies like Amazon and utilities to operate drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) under specific conditions, but the waiver process was complicated and limited broader adoption.
