Kauai firefighters on Monday rescued a 52-year-old California man and two minors hiking with him after they spent the night on the Kalalau Trail.

The Kauai Fire Department said in a news release today that the hikers in distress had been reported Sunday evening, but due to darkness, the rescue was performed on Monday for safety reasons.

KFD’s Air 1 helicopter flew to the hikers shortly after 11 a.m. at Kalalau Beach, and found the man, who was reported to be suffering from an ankle injury. He and the minors were transported by helicopter to Princeville Airport.

American Medical Response evaluated the man, who declined further medical treatment.
