Maui police said a Makawao man died Sunday after falling down a waterfall off Hana Highway.

He has been identified as Robert Carvalho, 18, of Makawao.

Police said the incident happened just before 1 p.m. Sunday near mile marker 6 of the highway, and that Carvalho was reportedly hiking with acquaintances when he lost his footing and fell.

Maui Fire Department used the Air Hekili helicopter to reach Carvalho at the bottom of the waterfall, estimated to be a 120-foot drop. First responders determined him to be dead at the scene.

Based on a preliminary investigation, police said there are no signs of foul play. An autopsy has been scheduled.

“The Maui Police Department extends our deepest condolences to Mr. Carvalho’s family and friends,” said police in a statement.
