LIHUE — The community is invited to participate in the free Mokuto Kauai Ceremony: Silent Prayer for Peace that will take place on Saturday from 10 to 11:15 a.m. near the foodcourt area at the Kukui Grove Center.

Rev. Kohtoku Hirao of the Waimea Shingon Mission will conduct Mokuto, which stands for “silent prayer,” in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima holocaust.

Yuna Tueller, 14, a student at Hawaii Technology Academy, and Trinity-Hana Williams, 13, a student at the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, have been folding orizuru, or paper cranes using Japanese origami paper, in preparation for “Mokuto Kauai Ceremony: Silent Prayer for Peace.” Tueller and Williams learned the craft from Mrs. Hiroko Kunioka of Lihue.
