A months-long investigation into contraband smuggling at Northern State Prison in Newark has led to a guilty plea from a former senior corrections officer, according to a statement from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

Werner Gramajo, 48, of Newark, admitted to conspiring to commit official misconduct after supplying an inmate with cash, clothing, jewelry, food, and other prohibited items in exchange for monthly payments.

The investigation was conducted by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) following evidence uncovered by the New Jersey Department of Corrections’ Special Investigations Division.

As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend Gramajo serve 364 days in the Essex County jail, followed by probation.
