US Marshals Arrest Suspended Driver In Deadly Newark Hit

A 36-year-old Newark man was arrested and charged on Tuesday, Aug. 5 in connection with an April hit-and-run crash that left a 53-year-old woman dead, authorities said.

Members of the US Marshals Task Force arrested Lavon Cooley, who struck Margie Reyes on April 26 at 4:30 p.m. on Frelinghuysen Avenue in Newark, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said.

Cooley is charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash, causing death while driving with a suspended license, endangering an injured victim, and possession of a dangerous controlled substance, authorities said.
