LARAMIE — Jay Sawvel would be the first to tell you his safeties didn’t play up to par last fall.

The second-year University of Wyoming football coach has a closer eye on the secondary than any other position. That’s because Sawvel has coached defensive backs for the majority of his career dating back to 1999.

Injuries played a big part in the Cowboys’ defensive struggles last fall. They’ll have a separate set of obstacles this time around, as starting safeties Isaac White and Wyett Ekeler graduated. Starting nickelback Wrook Brown also transferred to Houston during the offseason.
