The nation's worst measles outbreak in more than 30 years has reached Wisconsin.

More than 1,300 cases — mostly children and teens — have been detected in at least 40 states since January, when an outbreak began in a rural Texas community with relatively low vaccination rates against the disease, according to figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

Measles, which is caused by a virus, is spread through the air and is highly contagious — much more so than even COVID-19 or chickenpox.

In early August, Wisconsin health officials announced the state's first confirmed cases of the year.
