Speed was a factor in a Slate Belt crash that took the life Saturday of a 54-year-old Pen Argyl man, state police said.

Pennsylvania State Police in Belfast said the accident happened just before 4:45 p.m. along East Central Avenue at Park Road in East Bangor.

Teddy Elphick was operating a Honda motorcycle at a “high rate of speed” in the southbound lane when he hit a right curve and lost control, state police said.

Elphick then went over the handlebars of the bike, striking a boulder along the shoulder head-on, state police said.

State police said Elphick was wearing a helmet at the time of the single-vehicle accident. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital-Anderson in Bethlehem Township for treatment of injuries.
