CHICAGO — Ke’Bryan Hayes, one of the best defensive third basemen in MLB, doesn’t have a secret to his success defensively. He became a Gold Glove defender by fielding regular ground balls.
“The game is the game,” Hayes said. “Because of social media and stuff, people want to come up with something that looks exciting. Everyone is trying to find the next new thing. I just try to keep it fundamental. Pay attention to what I’m doing. Closing my shoulder to first when I throw. Little stuff like that.”
He has an old school approach to practicing defense because that’s what his dad taught him. Charlie Hayes, played in the big leagues for 14 seasons, showed Ke’Bryan how to play the position.
