(WJW) -- A New Zealand flight crew faced extreme cold and dangerous flying conditions in order to rescue three people who needed medical attention at a U.S. base in Antarctica.

According to a Wednesday news release from the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), three staff members at the United States' McMurdo Station were in need of medical attention they weren't able to get at the base.

One of them required "urgent" medical care, the release stated, however the extent of the staff members' conditions wasn't released.
