Why commit to one closer when you have four pitchers who are capable of doing the job in your bullpen?
Yankees fans were asking that after the club acquired David Bednar and Camilo Doval prior to last Thursday’s trade deadline, adding them to a bullpen that already included Luke Weaver and Devin Williams. The question only grew louder with Williams, the Yankees’ incumbent closer, blowing his second consecutive save in Monday’s loss to the Rangers .
That performance, which saw the right-hander surrender a game-tying home run to Joc Pederson in the ninth inning, had Aaron Boone reconsidering his stance on the closer’s role on Tuesday afternoon.
While he said it’s possible that Williams will continue to pitch in save situations, the manager is now “a little more open to using other guys.
