Dothan, Ala. (WDHN) -- Following the municipal elections held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the City of Dothan has released information to guide residents on what to expect next in the election process.

According to Alabama Code Section 17-16-20(a), an automatic recount is triggered in federal, state, and county elections when a candidate is defeated by not more than one-half of one percent of the total votes cast.

However, this provision does not apply to municipal elections, meaning no automatic recount will occur in the Dothan races.

In races where no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast, a runoff election will be required between the two candidates who received the highest number of votes.

A majority is defined as 50 percent of the total votes plus one—not simply 51 percen
