COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division begin an investigation into an inmate’s death.

A 42-year-old man was booked into the Colleton County Detention Center on July 23 and was found the next day unresponsive in his cell, Sgt. Laura Rutland says.

Emergency officials from Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded and began to provide life-saving efforts. The man was airlifted to a nearby trauma center for further medical care. He died on Aug. 2.

The Colleton County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the man’s identity.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office Office of Professional Standards is conducting an internal administrative review into the matter.
