NEW YORK (AP/WJW) — Cleveland Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams nearly did something no Cleveland pitcher has done since the 1980s -- throw a no hitter.

Unfortunately, Wednesday afternoon, Williams was only able to keep New York Mets hitless through the middle of the ninth inning. The team did go on to win the game 4-1, though, and did sweep in Queens.

The Guardians still have the longest no-hitter drought in the majors.

The 26-year-old right-hander has never thrown a complete game as a professional. His career-high for pitches is 109, set May 26 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Guardians have not thrown a no-hitter since May 15, 1981, when Len Barker twirled the eighth perfect game of the modern era in a 3-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
