The Woodstock Town Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to halt Phase Two of the town’s long-debated bike and pedestrian improvement plan, following organized opposition from residents along West Court Street.

The vote came after the council’s Street, Sidewalks, and Trails Committee had unanimously endorsed a revised version of the project in June, a scaled-down multi-use path along Summit Avenue and a sidewalk along Court Street, estimated to cost $4.7 million. The updated plan eliminated the West Spring Street segment and narrowed the path in constrained areas, shifting the project’s scope from a “park-to-park” vision to a “park-to-downtown” connection in order to meet Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) grant requirements.
