A Long Island man brandishing a sword was shot by police Tuesday after faking a hostage situation, according to Suffolk County police.

The man, identified as 33-year-old Joseph Restaino of Bay Shore, called 911 around 1:25 p.m. and reported a hostage being held at a residence at 1625 Ohio Ave.

When officers arrived at the scene, Restaino allegedly waved the sword and refused to drop it. After a Taser didn’t stop the suspect, at least one officer discharged their weapon.

Restaino was taken to South Shore University Hospital and underwent surgery , according to CBS New York, but his condition was unknown as of Wednesday.

A subsequent search of the residence found no hostages in the home.
