Jack Sparrow lay in pieces on the floor in the foyer of the Crescent City Auction Gallery on Tuesday morning. The 10-foot-tall statue of the Disney pirate was heavy, made of sheet metal and car parts. Auction house employees struggled to assemble Jack. They climbed ladders to put his head in place, despite his uncooperative, dangling dreads, which were made of steel cable.
Jack is one of the first things visitors will behold when they arrive to preview the almost 600 pieces in the sale of the estate of the late Joe Jaeger Jr., which takes place on Aug. 15 and 16. The trove, which could fetch as much as $830,000, is a wild mingling of fine antique furniture, paintings, sculpture, arcade games, rock 'n' roll memorabilia, curios and fabulous examples of tongue-in-cheek kitsch.
