Phoenix Police Department detectives are investigating remains found by a hiker in a remote part of the South Mountain Preserve.

Officers responded at 10:05 p.m. Aug. 3 to 35th Avenue and Ansell Road after a person reported finding remains “believed to be human,” according to a department release.

Homicide detectives were flown onto the mountain by the Phoenix Air Support Unit and found the remains.

Authorities determined due to the location on the mountain and weather conditions, they would return on Aug. 6 with more assistance, including the Maricopa County Office of Medical Examiner to process the scene and recover the remains.

Further examination showed no apparent signs of foul play, police said, adding the investigation is continuing.
