CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- As the school year draws closer many families will look to get ahead on back-to-school shopping, but it can be tough for those living at or close to poverty.

For families struggling to make ends meet, gearing up for the school year is much more difficult. On top of pencils, notebooks, and backpacks, hygiene products need to be re-supplied as well, but can add up quickly at the checkout register.

"School necessary supplies are provided by the district, they were finding that hygiene products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine products, were really in greater need than back to school supplies. So we switched efforts United Way's teaming up with Siemens Energy to coordinate this drive and get the supplies to the kids in need," said Hope Howell, coordinat
