NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) -- North Tonawanda is celebrating its first step of a $2 million extension of the Erie Canal bike path.

"As we break ground today, we're really paving a way for a healthier and more connected North Tonawanda," said North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec. "One that celebrates our waterfront values, active living and continues to invest in our community and future."

When finished, the path will extend a mile and a half past Mayor's Park to North Tonawanda's Botanical Gardens.

Margaret Andrey, who has lived in the area for 50 years, has the bike bath right in her backyard.

"I think it's wonderful, I think it really is, it will be very nice," she said. "The only thing I have a little concern about is e-bikes going very fast down this road."
