ALEXANDRIA — With two exceptions, there were no upsets in the opening round of match play in the Men's Masters Championship bracket Wednesday.

All of the top seeds won except for the co-medalist Mark Pokorney, who was defeated 1-up by the 16th seed, Mark Frie; and Mike Herzog, the third seed, who was defeated by 14th seed, Norty Blanchard in 20 holes.

Three-time champion Jon Empanger was a 3-1 winner. Tom Ryan, the sixth seed, defeated the 11th seed, three-time champ Dan Elton. The Ryan/Elton match had an interesting twist to it — Ryan played against Elton in the championship four years ago and won, 3-2, the same margin he had in Wednesday's rematch.
