ON THIS DAY IN 1905 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “OYSTER BAY, N.Y., AUG. 5 ― If Russia and Japan fail to agree on a basis of peace in the Far East, it will not be the fault of the United States or of President Roosevelt. The opening ceremonies of the conference between the accredited envoys of the two powers were happily inaugurated in this harbor today and with all the pomp the most ceremonious court in the Old World could require. The susceptibilities of the envoys were taken into consideration in every detail, and there was an earnest desire on the part of everybody, from the President down to the jacktars, that there should be a sure issue of peace.”
