WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) — There's a lot of risk that comes along with driving race cars. But at Watkins Glen International, a team of almost 400 first responders is ready to go to keep the drivers safe.
"Every week we do different training things," said Matt Coyne, the track services coordinator at WGI. "We work with the local clubs that come in. The sanctioning groups like NASCAR and IMSA, and other groups like that, to learn more about their cars and their systems so that we can operate efficiently."
Coyne and his team of volunteers have been training since March. He said working as a firefighter at WGI takes a special skill set.
