FRANKLIN COUNTY, Arkansas — Plans to build a 3,000-bed state prison in Franklin County are facing pushback now over whether the site can provide enough water to support the facility.

Gravel & Grit, a non-profit organization formed earlier this year in opposition to the project , said the water situation alone should halt construction plans altogether.

"There's nowhere near enough to supply a prison. Their top range estimates are 500,000 gallons a day," said Gravel & Grit director Adam Watson.

Two test wells were drilled at the proposed 815-acre site near Mill Creek Mountain in Charleston. Watson said the findings raise serious concerns about the region’s ability to support such a large facility without draining resources from nearby residents.
