The New Mexico Department of Health is giving away portable cribs to parents with children under 2 who complete a free training on safe sleep habits.

The training, called the Safe Sleep Ambassador program, is part of a new campaign to reduce the risk of sudden infant death and other sleep-related fatalities.

After completing the training, parents will know to put infants to bed on their backs and on a firm, flat surface free from pillows, toys or other loose bedding. The Department of Health encouraged supervised tummy time while infants are awake.

"A Pack 'n Play and 30 minutes of training can save a life," New Mexico Chief Medical Officer Miranda Durham said in a statement Wednesday. "Every infant in New Mexico deserves the safest possible start in life."
