Hallac updates Dare Commissioners about new Buxton seashore closure

A few days after the Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) closed a section of shoreline adjacent to the old Buxton Naval site, CHNS Superintendent Dave Hallac discussed that decision and efforts to remedy the problem at the Aug. 4 Dare County Commissioners meeting.

“We’ve had a degradation of conditions over the last few days,” he explained, providing a history of the petroleum-related contamination at the former Naval surveillance site and the cleanup being conducted by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
