KINGSTON – An audit of the Ulster County occupancy tax by Comptroller March Gallagher’s office has uncovered $251,756 in unpaid taxes, penalties and interest by hospitality businesses in the county.
The audit, at the request of County Executive Jen Metzger, covered the period from December 1, 2022 to May 31, 2024.
The audit found issues included those by operators and the county finance department.
Common issues among operators included failure to file, inaccurate filings, misapplied exemption rates and missing documentation.
The audit also found gaps in the administration of the tax and Gallagher believes that can be rectified.
