MAHOPAC – Calling it a “bittersweet moment,” Mahopac Superintendent of Schools Christine Tona has left Putnam’s largest school system.

The surprise announcement came at a Board of Education meeting when the 33-year career educator announced her retirement effective September 1, however since the school board had extended her contract in the spring of 2024, she has taken a leave of absence meaning her position ends today.

Tona told the trustees that she “fully intended to continue through June 2027 and perhaps beyond but as life reminds us, plans change.”

Tona called it a “privilege to work alongside some of the most dedicated educators and staff members I have ever known who place the needs of our students at the center of every decision.”

She commended the district’s administrators. “
