NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The U.S. Gymnastics Championships return to New Orleans for the first time in 30 years.
“When we announced it, our community really celebrated in it,” said Li Li Leung, USA Gymnastics president. “They are really excited to be here and we can’t be more excited to be here as well.”
The competition features five Olympic medalists. In all, 136 athletes will compete over three days for a spot on the U.S. national team. This is the first U.S. championship since the Paris Games last year.
“You will see a lot of familiar faces from Paris,” Leung said. “Truly, New Orleans is the start of the next generation and the start of the next games in LA.”
The event comes at a time when the city is working to entice more visitors. Jay Cicero, president of the Greater New Orleans Spor
