Mitchell Gray, a 29-year-old man sought in connection with a shooting and arson in Ontario's cottage country, has been confirmed dead. His body was discovered alongside another in a home that was set ablaze last Friday near Bracebridge, Ontario.
A post-mortem examination conducted by the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service revealed that Gray died from smoke inhalation. The second body has been identified as 59-year-old Anita Gray, who suffered a gunshot wound. Additionally, police confirmed the identity of a man found shot in the driveway, 60-year-old Paul Gray. Local media reports indicate that the victims are Mitchell Gray's parents.
Police responded to reports of gunfire at the family's residence shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, they found one man dead outside and the house engulfed in flames. Two more bodies were later discovered inside the home.
In response to the incident, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order, warning local residents of a “potentially armed individual in distress.” This advisory was lifted just before 2 a.m. on Saturday. Although Gray had not been located at that time, police stated he was not considered a threat to public safety, as the individuals involved were known to each other.
A wanted bulletin was issued for Gray, and as of Tuesday afternoon, the Ontario Provincial Police were still searching for him. An OPP spokesperson stated, “He remains outstanding. We ask that anyone with information about the incident or his whereabouts to contact police or Crime Stoppers.”
Despite the confirmation of the bodies inside the fire-damaged home, police continued their search for Gray. “You’re always never quite sure,” police remarked regarding the situation. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to Bracebridge OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
