OTTAWA - Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed concern over Israel's recent decision to take control of Gaza City, stating it could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis for both Palestinians and hostages. The Israeli cabinet approved the plan today, with the foreign ministry clarifying that the intention is not to annex the territory but to eliminate Hamas.

The United Nations has labeled this move a dangerous escalation, warning that it may necessitate a significant ground invasion, potentially displacing tens of thousands of civilians. This cabinet decision follows remarks from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who indicated that Israel aims to gain complete control over the Palestinian territory.

Carney criticized the takeover, calling it "wrong" and reiterated Canada's position advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. He emphasized that Hamas should not play a role in governing the area.

In a related development, Germany announced it would not permit the export of military equipment that could be utilized in Gaza. This aligns with a similar policy Canada has maintained since last year.

The situation remains tense as international leaders continue to respond to the unfolding crisis.
