The Texas Rangers are assisting in the investigation of an of a man in Edinburg who died while in the custody of the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office, according to a news release.
Gonzalo Reyes Hernandez. 34, was arrested late Tuesday night. He died after "repeatedly striking his head" against a concrete driveway and assaulting three deputies, the sheriff's office said.
The news release said deputies with the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance at the 6900 block of Sigley Drive in Edinburg. Witnesses said a man, identified as Hernandez, was jumping fences and breaking neighbors' windows.
When deputies arrived, they found Hernandez lying on the driveway of a home with visible head injuries, according to the news release.
