HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A Houston Fire Department captain is being treated for burns after getting briefly trapped inside a burning house on the city's south side, according to investigators.

Deputy Chief Roger Westhoff said a fire crew spotted smoke off Botany and Leitrim around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday.

"Initial reports that there may have been somebody still living inside, as they were trying to do a search and put out the fire, the fire escalated," Westoff said. "They decided to leave, and as they were leaving, they got a little bound up going out the door, and they had to evacuate through a window."

During that process, the deputy chief says a captain inside the home called for a mayday after getting burned.
