LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Lincoln’s Food Fort held several block parties this week, working to feed families and give out free school supplies ahead of the school year.
The final one took place on Wednesday evening outside Saratoga Elementary near 13th and South streets. There, kids and families could play games, have a meal and get free backpacks filled with school supplies for any student who needed one.
The nonprofit has been operating in Lincoln nearly nine years now. Executive Director Michaela Akridge said the mission is about more than just providing “handouts,” and focuses on building relationships with the community too.
