LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — As students across Nebraska prepare to return to school, administrators are working to ensure they do so with as few distractions as possible.

For elementary and middle school students across Lincoln Public Schools, that could mean cellphones are shut off in backpacks or lockers.

Some middle school and high school students may even have to turn theirs in at the beginning of class.

LB 140 , passed this past legislative session, is hoping to make it easier for students to focus and possibly eliminate some of the mental health related impacts.

“What we saw is — initially when we adopted this — a reduction in student conflicts in the hallways, in our high schools because kids didn’t have an opportunity to chat and maybe plan a meet up or an incident,” said Ryan Zaba
