Voters in the Ninilchik area will have the chance this fall to decide whether to create a new recreational service area centered around the Ninilchik School pool. The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly voted Tuesday night to advance Ordinance 2025-17, placing the initiative on the October 7 ballot.

The proposed Ninilchik Recreational Service Area would generate local tax revenue to support recreational services, beginning with the school pool, which has faced repeated funding uncertainties in recent years. The concept began as a citizen-led petition, certified in June, and gained support through a July community meeting in Ninilchik and sponsorship from Assembly Member Brent Johnson.
