The Kenai River Sportfishing Association (KRSA) welcomed 100 children, ages 9–14, of military members stationed in Alaska to the Kenai River on Wednesday for its annual Jr. Classic.
The event offered more than just a day of fishing. It began on Tuesday in a classroom in Anchorage, where kids learned about the salmon life cycle, river ecology, and essential boating safety — including a hands-on cold-water safety drill using ice buckets and life jackets.
KRSA Executive Director Shannon Martin says the goal is to inspire both stewardship and lasting memories. “These kids are our next generation of anglers — and stewards of this river.”
The event included a complimentary round-trip bus ride from Anchorage to Soldotna.
