Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus announced mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been found in the Greenwood Lake area.

This is the first time this year the virus has been found in the county.

"This is an important reminder that mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus are present in our community," Neuhaus said in a statement released by his office.

"We still have a long mosquito season ahead of us," said Dr. Jennifer Roman, the acting Orange County health commissioner. "Residents should always try to protect themselves, but especially now that West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes have been detected in the county."

Symptoms of West Nile virus include headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea and a rash. About one in 150 people who are infected can develop a
