RICHFIELD, Utah (ABC4) — The over 1,300 firefighters battling the devastating Monroe Fire just south of Richfield in Sevier County have achieved 18% containment on the flames that have spread over 66,275 acres.

Fire officials said the southern front of the fire slopped over the ridge at Rock Canyon, creating favorable conditions for firefighters and allowing for dozers to build a line across less-steep terrain. Firefighters will continue to work to pinch off the fire edges, forcing it to burn back into itself when the wind changes.

Meanwhile, in Monroe Canyon, crews used westerly winds to strengthen the direct line, which officials report is nearing completion. Helicopters also assisted ground crews with water drops, and firefighters continue to mop up around communication structures.
