Winston-Salem State’s football players and coaches caught a break on Thursday morning with cool temperatures for its first practice.
About 85 players were out there as Coach Robert Massey and his assistants worked mostly on conditioning for two hours.
“It’s about getting them in shape for the fourth quarter of games,” said Massey, whose team is coming off a 7-3 season. “We had a lot of guys in summer school, and they were working out so that’s going to help.”
Justin Williams, the strength and conditioning coach, did most of the yelling and screaming as players did a variety of running drills.
The highlight had to be the 23 sprints of 100 yards as three separate groups navigated those runs. There were a couple of players who lost a little breakfast, but to their credit, kept on running.
